Brendan Fowler is an emerging visual artist from Calgary, Alberta. He received his painting BFA with distinction from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2019 and currently lives in Calgary. Brendans professional practice is devoted to the study of alchemy, mythology & animism. His concepts emerge through a synthesis of automatic drawing, painting, and sculpture using materials including; stone, wood, paper & metal.
Brendans interest in these subjects developed through his experience living with Pachyonychia congenita. PC is a rare genetic mutation that primarily affects the skin and nails, leading to severe painful calluses on the feet. To endure this condition, strict rituals must be observed to overcome the physical and mental exhaustion faced on a daily basis. Metaphorically speaking, It is a fiery serpent, pursuing relentlessly feeding on your destiny and dreams.
Historically, alchemy is regarded as a protoscientific method for transmuting lower metals into Gold, or mythological elements such as the Philosopher’s Stone. Most commonly interpreted as a chemical process, many great minds like Swiss psychologist Carl Jung have suggested this ancient practice was not based in practical theory, but is rather a symbolic representation of our own self discovery.
In studying the psychology of alchemy, we may then consider that the true elixir of life is not an external treasure to be sought after or acquired; It is an internal transformation, necessary on the path towards realizing our highest self.
Through a juxtaposition of symbolic imagery and abstraction, Brendan opens doorways into surreal landscapes, charged with magic and mystery. In these places the wind speaks, stones can see, old roots feed new life. Alchemy will not eliminate physical pain, but it can teach us how to transform it.
Outside of his professional practice, Brendan maintains a deep passion for music, film, and physical fitness. The concepts in Studio II pay homage to the artists and art which have inspired Brendan to create.
